Our relationship with the natural world is complex and messy. It’s impossible for humans to survive without impacting nature, but as the dominant species on the planet, human beings have had an outsized impact on their environment. Simultaneously, one might argue that ours is the only species capable of fully appreciating the wild, beautiful, and sometimes bizarre elements of the natural world; artistic renderings of the natural world are a testament to this fact. But what are we seeking when we sing about a tree, a mountain, an animal? This is not something that other creatures do. In this program, we explore the ways in which the human interpretation of the natural world aligns with (and diverges from) reality, and what nature sounds like when filtered through the human voice.
